Why “How Much Does It Cost?” Is the Wrong First Question

The useful first question is: what is in scope?

Two projects that both say “custom smart ring” can differ by molds, app ownership, target markets, and volume. Unit price without those fields is not comparable.

Path Choice Moves the Whole Stack

Private label / light ODM: more of the design already exists. You still pay for branding, samples, and production, but you avoid inventing a full mechanical stack when the platform fits.

Deeper ODM: more changes on a reference platform. Each mechanical or firmware change can add NRE and sample loops (customization layers).

Tooling, NRE, and Ownership

Tooling and non-recurring engineering often dominate early cash on OEM-class work. Ask:

  • What is included in the tooling line?
  • Is the fee refundable or credited?
  • Who owns the mold after payment?
  • Can the factory run other brands on the same tool?

BOM and Configuration

Software Costs Are Easy to Under-Scope

Logo print is not a white-label app. App paths range from the existing companion app to white-label branding to a fully custom app (App/SDK page). Servers, store accounts, privacy materials, and maintenance each have owners and costs.

Freeze software scope in the same commercial document as hardware.

Certification Can Dominate Calendar and Cash

Radio and material compliance depend on markets and design maturity.
