IP68 vs 5ATM for Smart Rings: Test Methods, Limitations and Buyer Questions

How OEM buyers should read IP68 vs 5ATM smart ring claims: standards families, model-level reports, and what to request before you print packaging.

  • IP68 and 5ATM come from different testing families. They are not free synonyms on packaging.
  • Ask for the model-specific PDF, the standard name, and the conditions on the report, not a verbal “waterproof.”

Why Buyers Mix IP68 and 5ATM

Marketing copy often prints both strings as if they mean the same protection. They do not.

  • IP codes (for example IP68) come from the IEC 60529 IP Code system for ingress protection against solids and liquids (Intertek IP testing overview; Wikipedia IP code). The first digit covers solids; the second covers liquids. For IP68, dust-tight protection is paired with continuous immersion under conditions the manufacturer specifies (depth and time are report-defined, not a universal free-dive number).
  • ATM ratings on wearables (for example 5ATM) come from the watch industry water-resistance tradition. ATM means atmospheres of pressure. Many consumer guides map 5ATM to swimming/shower marketing language, but real permission always depends on the standard, test conditions, and the maker’s instructions (Wikipedia Water Resistant mark; watch-industry explainers). Yawell model reports that list 5ATM typically reference the ISO 22810 family on the report label.
  • Wearable explainers treat IP and ATM as different testing traditions, not a single ladder where one number is always “better” (Wareable IP/ATM guide).

A Pass result always belongs to a specific sample, method, and report. It does not automatically transfer to a sibling color, a new mold, or a different chip branch.

What to Put on the RFQ

  1. Target use: splash only, hand wash, shower, swim marketing, or none.
  2. Target markets and retail claim wording you want to print.
  3. Exact model ID you will brand.
  4. Request: report PDF + standard + conclusion + sample ID.

If you need swim-facing copy, say so early. It changes validation work and sometimes the hardware path.

Common Mistakes

  • Printing “IP68 + 5ATM” because two reports exist on related products.

1. Is IP68 better than 5ATM?

Not as a single ranking. Different methods measure different conditions, and IP68 immersion parameters are manufacturer/report-defined. Compare reports for the same model you will ship (Wareable; IEC 60529 explainers).

2. Can one report cover a whole product family?

Only if the report and BOM identity say so. Default assumption: one model, one evidence set.

3. What if my brand needs a claim the base model does not support?

Treat it as a project change: validation work, possible design change, new report. Put it in the RFQ early.
